Evolution of a Radical Idea
When Desi first showed me her radical idea of a new postural template in April of 2012, I immediately dismissed it as incorrect since it was contrary to my “optimal blueprint” of postural alignment that I had worked on for over 15 years and on which I based my professional career. Furthermore, Desi’s alignment ideas were antithethical to the accepted model of good alignment by any postural system that I knew of at that time. Yet, when I would practice the new alignment, my chronic hip pain would be alleviated, and I was able to do advanced balancing poses for the first time. Even though I didn’t understand how Desi’s new alignment model could work, I continued to experiment with the template on a daily basis for the rest of 2012 simply because I felt better when I practiced it.
After 8 months of arguing with Desi I eventually realized that she was correct—when the glutes go down, the nervous system is quieted, and when the glutes are actively drawn upward, the body can experience a new level of dynamic alignment and power. For over 30 years I purposefully pulled my hips and tail down in order to lengthen my lower back. At the end of 2012, I finally woke up to the truth that the insertion of the glutes is at the base of the pelvis and the muscle origin is at the top. Since that realization, I have not consciously pulled my butt down again to try to muscularly engage it. I haven’t “scooped” or tucked my tailbone again since…on purpose! Now 4 years later, my hips are pain-free, and I have spring back in my step. Also, I have reformed the shape of my hips and lower back, and I literally have developed a small butt for the first time in my life! HA!
When Desi and I started sharing Sridaiva and the Bowspring in workshops 3 years ago, we taught the full Roots postural sequence. In retrospect, the Roots—the routine and the poses—was too advanced, especially since the Bowspring template was not fully worked out yet. Students ended up hurting, being discouraged, and confused. We lost the majority of our students in the early systematizing of the Bowspring method.
As we taught the Bowspring at weekly classes at Vital and then in over 100 workshops in 8 countries, we learned a lot about how to make the method more accessible and effective. We observed that there are universal reactions and challenges to the practice of the Bowspring, along with universal benefits and transformative healing. As our understanding of the universal somatic effects of the Bowspring grew with repeating experiences of new students, we became more skilled at presenting the new alignment so all levels of student could learn the Bowspring more easily.
The system evolved so much even in the past year, we were unable to present a clearly defined alignment method on a global scale until now. After 3 years of trials and many errors, we have now organized the Bowspring system so that it can be applied to yoga poses, athletics, fitness regimes, and most importantly, into every day life. Applying the Bowspring to all sitting, standing, or walking, can immediately benefit anyone’s health. The pragmatic presentation of the Bowspring as a basic postural guide for any daily activity now has vast implications for improving health worldwide.
GlobalBowspring.com is the collective result of a remarkable amount of dedicated work by a lot of talented people:
First and foremost, Bowspring is all from the visionary genius of Desi Springer. I certainly helped to
